The path that runs from Quay Lane to the old railway line is being widened and resurfaced with tarmac using grant money secured under the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
New retaining wall
A new retaining wall will also be installed to help ensure stability of the path. Where possible, the wall will re-use the stone from the existing wall to ensure it is in keeping with the area.
In order to carry out the improvements to the path, it will be closed from Monday 17 February until around Friday 21 March. Diversions for pedestrians and cyclists will be in place while the works are carried out.
Councillor Luisa Hillard, who is the council’s Cabinet member responsible for sustainability said:
“This upgraded cycle path is part of a wider strategy to support our residents and tourists in leaving their cars at home and travelling by more environmentally friendly, and enjoyable, means. This council is committed to improving the cycle network across the Island for safer cycling routes in our beautiful countryside.
“We encourage small businesses, such as cafes, pubs, hotels and B&Bs to support this strategy by installing bike racks for their customers. Grants are available via Community Action Isle of Wight.”
