Landguard Road surface in Sept 2024

Five-week road enhancement project set for Shanklin’s Landguard Road

Work to improve sections of a busy Shanklin thoroughfare is being planned by Island Roads for later this month.

Landguard Road and Landguard Manor Road are both to be improved during five weeks of work by Island Roads that is scheduled to begin on Monday 30th September 2024.

Excavating the highway
The work will involve excavating the highway to address underlying issues that have caused the surface to deteriorate.

Because of the depth of these excavations, it will be necessary to close the road at all times throughout the project.

Carried out in six phases
However the work, between Green Lane and the High Street will be done in six phases to reduce the impact on road users. Only the section of road directly affected by the work will be closed with locally signed diversions in place.

While closed as a through route for traffic, pedestrian access will remain, however there may be short diversions in place as the works progress.

Dates chosen to minimise the disruption
An Island Roads spokesperson said,

“We have programmed these works for a period between high summer and the Christmas season to minimise the disruption for local traffic and businesses.

“However we realise that, despite our efforts to reduce disruption, work of this nature will inevitable cause some local inconvenience as we would like to thank the local community in advance for their understanding and co-operation.”

In drawing up the schedule, Island Roads has contacted local businesses and also Shanklin Fire Station and Shanklin Police Station.

Temporary loading bay in Regent Street
As a result of these discussions, alternative arrangements have been made to accommodate the delivery needs of several businesses which will involve a temporary loading bay being created in Regent Street during some phases of work between 6am and midday.

In addition, due to the narrow width of the carriageway and footway, Island Roads has no option but to close Landguard Road car park on safety grounds during that latter phases of the project.

Local stakeholders will be kept informed of progress throughout the work.
