As of 6pm tonight the Cowes Floating Bridge will be taken out of service for essential maintenance.
A drive shaft has failed after 34 years of service and needs replacing, but as this part cannot be sourced immediately, it will have to be manufactured – locally happily.
With it having to be made the service will remain out of action over the weekend while the part is produced and fitted.
Cars will have to go around the long way, but pedestrians will be pleased to hear that a launch will be put into operation to transfer them between East Cowes and Cowes.
It’s hoped that the floating bridge will return to normal on Monday, although the council tells us that every effort will be made to bring the floating bridge back into service sooner.
