Folkstation Festival 2009

With just two weeks to go, make sure that that you grab your tickets for this event before they are sold out.

Folkstation 2009Following the huge success of the debut Folkstation Festival last year, organisers are bringing it back to Havenstreet Steam Railway between 10-12th July.

The Steam Railway is proving to be a great venue for events such as this (the Midsummer Jazz event last weekend saw over 750 people enjoying themselves) and this year at least 15 acts from around the UK have been confirmed to play over the two day Folkstation Festival.

We’ll have more details over the next two weeks of the schedules, as well as profiles of some of the musicians playing.

In the meantime, the action kicks off on the Friday night with a Ceilidh and concert with Tom Leary (pictured) and PJ Wright.

They will also be headlining on the Saturday night with their recently formed band, ‘Limited Edition’.

Folkstation 2009 - Tom LearyRenowned fiddle player Tom Leary is also a member of the legendary ‘Feast of Fiddles’ and has worked extensively live and in the studio with many great names from the folk and rock scene, including Fairport Convention (on the island again in September), Jethro Tull, Humble Pie, and The Electric Light Orchestra.

Tom is joined by the acclaimed guitar virtuoso P J Wright, plus Graeme Taylor and Jon Davie – both former members of the ground-breaking early 70s band ‘Gryphon’, which Melody Maker once dubbed ‘The 13th-Century Slade’! Graeme’s musical credentials also extend to being Rolf Harris’ unashamedly loyal guitarist for twelve years, appearing alongside Rolf three times at Glastonbury Festival!

Commenting on the quality of the headline act, festival organiser Mike Butler said, “After the success of our first event last year, we’ve worked hard to ensure we bring more top quality musicians to the Island. As a band and as individual musicians, these guys have a huge following nationally and always please audiences wherever they perform”.

Folkstation 2009 - Oyster GirlsSome of the other names appearing over the weekend (more details in due course) include The Wild Oats, Lucid, Jamie Griffin and Graham McCullogh.

The festival does include camping for the three days, but you can also opt to buy just day tickets.

As well as the live music from the two stages, there’ll also be dance displays through the Saturday and Sunday from the likes of Men of Wight, Wight Belles and The Oyster Girls as well as craft stalls and of course the all important refreshments tent including real-ale!

FolkStation co-organiser Malcolm Hector said, “We believe our festival is really quite unique and we’re pleased to be able to provide a platform to showcase so many Island artistes, many of whom already have a big following locally “¦ And of course there’s the added interest of the steam trains running past and in some cases it will take a steam train ride to find the performers!”

There will be a full-service of steam trains on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway throughout the FolkStation weekend.
