Open Studio: Andrew Dowden Ceramic Designs

The Open Studio weekends will soon be upon us (more general details to come shortly), but in the meantime here’s one we recommend that you put in your diaries.

Open Studio: Andrew Dowden Ceramic DesignsBetween Friday 17 July to Mon 20th, Andrew Dowden will be opening his Ceramic Design Studio to the public.

Carpentry was Andrew’s profession for 20 years and he was inspired to take up ceramics whilst researching Isle of Wight pottery, now an absorbing interest.

Eight years’ research culminated in the first book to be dedicated to Isle of Wight potters, co-written with his wife Lisa.

Hand-carved and textured surfaces are a main feature of Andrew’s work, which is carried out while the clay is in the leather-hard stage. This technique leaves burred edges that need to be removed after the biscuit-firing – a lengthy process.

A limited palette of glazes and slips are used to complement the form and the colour of clay. Inspiration is all around.

Open Studios weekend involves a great deal of work and preparation, making new pieces and also clearing a space for display, but it’s also very enjoyable and satisfying.

Open Studio: Andrew Dowden Ceramic DesignsAndrew has the opportunity to chat to visitors about his ceramics as many of them like to ask technical questions about methods and glazes etc.

People are really interested and fascinated to hear about the making process – from the wet clay stage to the finished form – and to see where it all happens.
