The Fixed Link debate
“It’s not as simple as Yes/No”
So says Islander Geoff Underwood. Like thousands of others, he’s been following the Fixed Link debate, watching the comments of those petitioning for a fixed link as well as those petitioning against a fixed link.
Geoff posted this thought-provoking graphic to the Isle of Wight Fixed Link Referendum Facebook group last night.
The scale
What he’s done is create a scale, from which he’s asked readers to say where they are on it.
- It starts at 0 – which indicates no link whatsoever, ie. ferries.
- At 4 on the scale is where we’re currently at, ferry services across the Solent.
- 5.5 on the scale indicates subsidised ferries with more sailings.
- 7 Indicates a fixed link (with a fee of say £15) whilst ferries carry freight.
- 8.5 Indicates a free fixed link whilst ferries carry freight.
- 10 indicates several bridges and/or tunnels all free to use.
Pros and cons
Geoff believes that between 0-4 on the scale provides
Greater Island identity, low crime and a safer environment, but higher unemployment and greater poverty with young people leaving to find work.
Whilst 5-10 on the scale shows
Economic growth with more jobs and higher incomes as well as better access to mainland and Island. However, he believes it would attract more people and more traffic.
Geoff’s graphic is sure to spark some interesting debate, so where would you put your views on the scale?
