Independent Arts is a small, unique, local and independent registered charity, working with older people living on the Isle of Wight.
‘For The Record’ is a nostalgic exhibition which art practitioner; Helen Butler has devised for the older generation. Painted records will be exhibited, representing a picture of their youth.
Established in 1987, Independent Arts provides a wide range of therapeutic, creative arts activities and community projects for those with special needs, the elderly and disadvantaged people living on the Isle of Wight.
Initially, from helping just 12 people, in the home of the Project Director who founded the charity, they now deliver activities to over 40 residential homes, nursing homes and day care centres situated throughout the island, as well as at the Adelaide in Ryde.
Classes are open to the public and Adelaide caters for people who want to experience leisure art in a clam and relaxed atmosphere.
The range of therapeutic activities Independent Arts offer are tailored specifically for each group of people, from Creative Movement, Art, Craft – including clay modelling, Music – both entertainment and interactive, ‘Reminiscing & Discussion’ and ‘Soundbeam’.
For this exhibition, art practitioner Helen Butler has been working with older people and found reminiscence was a popular subject. Helen asked her Adelaide art class to paint a picture about their youth.
One enterprising lady, Pat, drew an old 78 record and painted small pictures of key moments in her life around it. This picture was the catalyst for For The Record. The Adelaide class artists plus residents from Solent Grange Residential Home, painted and decorated the records for this exhibition, music from times gone by has been a dominant theme throughout.
