Former Principal threatens libel action against Island councillor (updated)

Last updated:

This received from Chris Whitehouse. In his own words. Ed

The mystery surrounding the departure of the former Principal of Sandown Bay Academy has deepened with the revelation that solicitors have tried to gag a local councillor to prevent him from speaking out on the matter.

False and inflammatory comments
Solicitors for the head teacher have written to Cllr Chris Whitehouse (Newport West) who speaks on Education for the Conservative Group of Councillors on the Isle of Wight warning that they are “instructing Counsel specialising in libel” with a view to launching proceedings for comments he had previously made to the County Press.

The letter goes on to accuse the Councillor of making comments that are “false, inflammatory and within the public domain” and claiming that the remarks have “severely damaged” the head teacher’s “professional reputation and prospects of future employment”.

Cllr Whitehouse responded with typical robustness suggesting,

“Many observers, were your approach to become public knowledge, would feel that I have been rather restrained in my choice of language. If Ofsted perceive that I have misread or misinterpreted their findings I am sure they will let me know.”

Speaking today, Cllr Whitehouse adds,

“I will not be gagged or intimidated by anybody. There is a clear duty on elected councillors to speak out on matters affecting the education of children on the Island. I challenge the head teacher to come back to the Island and attend a public meeting in Sandown to account for herself and her actions, and to take questions from parents, councillors and the press. She should be joined by the head of the AET Academy chain. The truth should be told about precisely what has gone on.”

Cllr Whitehouse, how am I to take you seriously when you write articles like this? First you say they’re attempting to gag you – well, not really if you genuinely have stuck to the facts in your IWCP comments then it’s hardly libel is it? Then there’s this fantastic one-sided line “Cllr Whitehouse responded with typical robustness…” – talk about trying to influence the reader. You could… Read more »

Here he comes to save the day (or at least claim to have done so in a press release after the fact).

If this goes all the way will the IW Council be funding Cllr. Whitehouse’s costs?

Was he speaking as a private citizen or as a democratically elected representative?

@ D Barrel
It matters not in the capacity he was speakig. Should a libel action be successful, I imagine he will be fully personally liable. As far as I am aware, only potentially libellous statements spoken in Parliament are protected.

Agreed BRIAN but I am more interested in who is paying for the consequences of Cllr. Whitehouse’s statements.

@D Barrel
The answer lies in my previous post “…he will be fully personally liable”

With all due possible respect and sincerity, I have more of a problem with Cllr Whitehouse suggesting that the taxpayer should pay for a Public Meeting to grill Ms Khan-Jones, as if corruption will come to an end if go back to the mentality of ‘burning people at the stake’. Yes, Ms Khan-Jones actions should be investigated fully, yes, Ms Khan-Jones should face severe repercussions for her… Read more »

Whoa, you lot. I, for one, agree with Mr Whitehouse’s idea of a public questioning. With what I’ve heard and read so far, I’m inclined to believe that someone’s been caught red-handed in the act of ‘Moonlighting’. Confirmation of this or otherwise is my first interest…

Confusion may have arisen because of AET telling OnTheWight on 14th November that Mrs Khan Jones had been on extended leave of absence and not admitting that she had in fact left Sandown Bay Academy.

AET confirmed on 15th November that Mrs Khan Jones left their employment on 31st October 2013.

Hope that clears it up for you Dredd.

Is there no end to Chris W’s shamelessness, pandering to a populist public execution of the ex-head. And I agree with Joseph that it’s hilarious he bastes himself with his own fat, by telling us of his own “typical robustness”! He can’t wait to paint himself as a right ol’ hero, (“I will not be gagged or intimidated by anybody”), as though the rest of us are… Read more »

A quick google – Maybe ‘Pumblechook’, from Great Expectations, described by someone as “a puffed up, important-sounding word for a man full of self-importance”.

It definitely helps to see Chris W. as entertainment of this sort, rather than just fume! (As long as his self-aggrandisment doesn’t see him get to be Leader or MP here).

I know nothing at all about the circumstances of Mrs Khan-Jones’ departure as principal at Sandown – other than what I’ve read in the press. Nor do I know what Cllr Whitehouse said on the CP website or wherever he said what’s in contention. It is of course obvious that the situation is a ghastly mess, and that those responsible for running the school have made themselves… Read more »

We never take the credit for somebody else’s words, so when an article starts ‘this in from’, the words that follow are unedited from the author.

Chris knows that’s how we work, so he’s aware that’s how we’ll run anything he sends us, unless it’s a statement to add to an article we’ve penned.

In that case, here’s a man who desperately needs a good Agent. I’d offer, for a crippling fee, but regret that he’s in the wrong party. But I’ll offer him this tip for free. Stick to the facts, Chris: don’t embellish, don’t say anything you can’t substantiate, and don’t hymn your own praises in anything other than your election address, when we expect it. Or you WILL… Read more »
