Four year old Cassie wins ‘name the red squirrel mascot’ competition

The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust’s latest competition proved popular with the children, all 12 years old and under, with over 40 entering their choice of name for the organisation’s mascot.

Goldie is the name chosen by randomised selection for the new red squirrel mascot, made by Bernie.  The name was chosen by four-year-old Cassie Nunn from Shanklin.

Why she chose the name
Cassie said she chose Goldie because squirrels have golden hair like hers! She likes exploring the woods and finding wildflowers, her favourite is wild garlic.

Cassie goes to Nettlestone preschool where she has been busy learning about bees. She loves playing outside and jumping in puddles. Cassie also likes reading, swimming, gymnastics and Irish dancing.

The pictures of Cassie were taken at The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust Bluebell Day at the end of April.  It was very muddy and Cassie really enjoyed herself in the puddles!

Butler: A delightfully cheerful little girl
The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust chair, Helen Butler MBE said,

“Goldie is a good name for the mascot and Cassie is a delightfully cheerful little girl.”

The prize included a red squirrel soft toy, a book, a cushion, a red squirrel necklace, pencil and notebook.
