Cars and people at the Going Electric event

Going Electric show electrifies Newport Quay with sustainable transport options

Sunday saw the third edition of the popular Going Electric show, this time situated at the Newport Quay and Riverside Centre.

The show connects Islanders with local car dealerships and other businesses and organisations that are working towards a cleaner greener future, whether through electric transport or by adding heat pumps, solar panels or other energy saving measures to homes.

Top Island’s car dealers
The top Island’s car dealers – Leslies, Van Mossel Esplanade, Premier, Staddlestones, Central, Snows and Vehicle Consulting turned out in force to showcase a wide array of electric vehicles from second-hand modest models to the most luxurious in class.

As well as cars there were E-vans, E-bikes courtesy of WightBikes of Merstone, an electric boat thanks to Richardsons Yacht Services and a very well-frequented electrically powered Ice Cream van by Plaza Ices!

Leading non-profit organisations and others
Joining these businesses were the Island’s leading non-profit organisations – the Footprint Trust, Future IW, CycleWight, Keert, Green IW and the Mission Zero Business hub – who all deliver advice and advocacy in the energy saving space.

Trusted local home energy installers Island Renewables, IOW Solar, Solar and Renewable installations and Engenious spent the day advising people on the best solutions for solar and efficient home heating systems.

Rounding off the show’s exhibitors were JoJu, supplier of public charging on the Island, as well as the friendly local firm EVO driver training with their learner EV.

Solar powered hot dogs
Island Tea and Coffee served drinks throughout the event in return for donations to Wight Aid.

The EV owners area was busy all day long with people seeking first-hand advice on EV ownership and enjoying the solar powered hot dogs!

The day also saw a full schedule of talks take place at the Riverside Centre from local experts, on the most up to date insights into the changing landscape of the transport, homes and energy world.

Experiencing a world that is changing to electric power
Colin Palmer, director of Wight Community Energy who organises the show, said,

“The sun shone for our third Going Electric show, held this year on the Riverside in Newport.

“What a change in three years. Visitors could see so many new cars and bikes, experiencing a world that is changing to electric power for convenience, performance and of course to reduce the climate impact of burning fossil fuels.”

The 2024 Going Electric show was made possible by the kind support of Ridge Clean Energy, Red Funnel, PC Consultants and lottery funded Power to Change.
