We hear today that there is good news for cyclists who use the Cowes and Newport cycle path.
Later this month work will start on the route, which although may cause some problems in the short term, should lead to a better cycle path for the future.
A whopping £30,000 is being spent on sorting out the drainage system under the old railway line just north of Dodnor Lane. Regular users of the section will know that it has been prone to flooding over recent years, in some cases with up to a metre of water blocking the track.
We’re told that the work will take about four weeks to complete and whilst it’s happening there will, of course, be some disruption.
The section of the cycle path between Dodnor Lane and Newport, will be closed and cyclists diverted via Stag Lane and Horsebridge Hill.
Here’s what Cllr Giles had to say about it “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience but the work will help ensure the cycleway will remain open in periods of inclement weather when previously it may have been closed because of flooding.
“The scheme also underlines the council’s determination to provide a top-class network of cycleways. The Cowes to Newport route is used for around 57,000 cycle journeys each year and this will be the second major scheme carried out by the IW Council to improve this route in recent years.”
