The Isle of Wight Society for the Blind became the Newport store’s Local Charity partner in July. The scheme provides the chosen charity with fundraising and awareness for a full year. Since 2009, the scheme has raised more than £6 million to support local communities.
Sainsbury’s staff from across 12 stores supported the project including, Castlepoint, Christchurch, Bitterne West, Talbot Heath, Isle of Wight, Portswood, Broadcut, Ferndown, Shirely, Lordshill, Boscombe and Hedge End. The Dulux Ltd Centre in Newport donated all the paints, brushes, rollers and sanding paper.
The ongoing project will see colleagues tidying up the garden and painting the remaining rooms in the building. Store and Regional Managers will be rounded up in the early part of next year to get involved.
Paul Dyer, Newport Store Manager said:
“We had a brilliant time becoming decorators over the weekend. The Isle of Wight Society for the Blind means a lot to our store and I’m really glad we could get a group of volunteers to help make a difference. We look forward to finishing the project in the coming months.”
Simon Samuels, volunteer’s co-ordinator, added:
“We’d like to thank everyone at Sainsbury’s for their hard work and time. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received, especially from the colleagues. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished result and continuing our partnership.”
Michael Hoy built the Georgian building in 1895; the charity is now the longest running on the Island.
