Cllr Gordon Kendall quits the IWC Executive claims CP

Cllr Gordon Kendall, councillor for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge, has quit his role as Executive member for Human Resources, Organisation Chance and Exchequer Services, say the County Press.

The leader of the council, Cllr Jonathan Bacon, told OnTheWight, the resignation is unofficial at the moment as nothing had been received in writing.

“Probably” will resign from Island Independents
The news emerged following this morning’s Employment Committee meeting, where Cllr Kendall (along with Cllr Gauntlett) voted against recommendations to restructure the senior management.

When asked by the CP whether he would resign from the Island Independents, he replied “probably”.

Gordon KendallThe proposal he objected to was for the Managing Director’s role (Dave Burbage) to be phased out over the next year and the additional duties taken on by John Metcalfe, the current Head of Economy and Tourism.

New blood
Following the meeting, Cllr Kendall told OnTheWight he voted against the recommendations because he felt the council should be testing the market for suitable applicants for the top role, rather than elevating someone who already works within the council.

Once a senior officer at the Isle of Wight council himself, “We need someone with new ideas,” he said.

Role set to finish anyway
Senior-placed people within County Hall tell OnTheWight Cllr Kendall’s executive role would come to an end anyway, as the transformation reaches its conclusion.

Missed meetings
There has been some criticism of Cllr Kendall’s non-attendance at council meetings.

During 2014 he missed meetings of the Executive in May and June; the Property Disposal and Capital Programme Sub Committee in June and August; the Full Council meetings in September and October and the Employment Committee in October.

He’s not attended any of the expected senior decision-taking meetings this year – that is, the Isle of Wight Pension Fund Committee, Property Disposal and Capital Programme Sub Committee and the February Executive.

Impact on ward shared with Cllr Bacon?
This brings an interesting issue for the current leader of the council, Cllr Jonathan Bacon. Cllr Bacon voted in favour of the changes to senior management restructure.

Kendall and Bacon both represent Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. The only only ward on the Isle of Wight that has two councillors representing it.

It’s clearly too early to see if this will have an impact on residents of the Ward, but eyes will be on it.

Cllr Bacon told OnTheWight that he hoped that it would have no effect, concluding, “We are both there to represent residents who come to us.”

Cllr Kendall has yet to respond.

Cllr Bacon is a fantastic ward member and represents all three villages superbly.
It would be difficult for Cllr Kendall to stay as a member of the Executive having given a quote to the IWCP of his intent to resign.
Never a dull day at the IWC.

Does this administration of diverse and questionable talents actually WANT an unelected Tory administration by the back door?

When is someone going to get a grip?

Stewart. I suspect we are halfway to one anyway if you recall the Con-dependent voting alliance at the last Full Council and reflect on the absence of a Tory budget proposal this year.

Sad to say that you are probably correct, Geoff.

I wonder what happened to the euphoric atmosphere created by the Indies when the took power in May 2013?

How different and dismal it all looks today.

The tragedy is the Tories might get the chance to make it all so much worse.

It probably went the same way as the similarly euphoric atmosphere when Tony Blair was elected and we all know where that got us. I can only speak for myself, but candidates are going to have to do a hell of a lot more to win my vote than to continually slag off the opposition.

Knobby, I am no fan of Tony Blair, to be sure, but his governments delivered on the NHS, on schools, on welfare, on womens’ rights, on climate change, on civil rights, and much more.

Ian Stephens could do none of the above

“Once a senior officer at the Isle of Wight council himself, “We need someone with new ideas,” he said.”
This seems like a rather unwise thing for Cllr Kendall to have said, since it could be taken to mean that (as a former IWC senior officer) he doesn’t rate Mr Metcalfe. That would take him into a very murky area.

Mr Kendall I applaud you for your stance. Your experience and knowledge was ignored despite your best efforts to signal the issues this administration would face from day one. I hope you continue to represent your wards and vote using your knowledge and experience on matters impacting the island. There is no home grown tallent at current director or senior officer level. The post of MD is… Read more »

“It’s clearly too early to see if this will have an impact on residents of the Ward, but eyes will be on it. ” As a resident and business owner in the ward, perhaps I could be cynical and suggest no effect on the ward, much the same as Messrs Kendall and Bacon have at present. On the couple of occasions I’ve needed to contact them, I’ve… Read more »

Jess, colleagues of Cllr K tell me he is technology adverse. Cllr Bacon usually is very good at replying. I would try again.

I must apologise if you haven’t had a response from me. Some do fall through the net as I probably get in excess of 60 emails most days but to miss four is not excusable. Please try again on jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk Do check the spelling of ‘Jonathan’ as I have had some attempts to contact me go awry when people have put an ‘o’ instead of an ‘a’.

Way back, when dinosaurs roamed the Wight, there was a County Hall administration called Island First. They said they were independent. Their chief elected member for social sevices was a Cllr Gordon Kendall, a former County Hall employee. I was approached by a complainant over blatant failures by council social services and was asked to act as an official council complaints procedure “advocate” in what, I soon… Read more »

I must congratulate Gordon Kendall on his stance here. Just because an employee has got to the top of the pile via dead men’s shoe’s, doesn’t make that person right for the top job. The post should be properly advertised and the best person sort, either on or off the island. I am certain that there is island based talent that could and should be employed in… Read more »

I totally agree with Billy’s comments. Having Metcalfe at the helm of the steamship IWC, would be a disaster. I feel it would be like being a passenger about to board the titanic, knowing what was going to happen, yet unable to say or do anything to avert the inevitable. It’ll be like calling a plumber to fix a leak at Hoover Dam, when what you really… Read more »

Who wouldn’t resign over this decision to appoint John Metcalfe. This decision should be NEVER have been made some Independent Councillors had little or no knowledge it was about to take place. Councillor Bacon please think again.
