Grace’s Bakery and Brave Island’s design competition: Unveiling the winning label

Grace’s Bakery teamed up with the Isle of Wight’s creative network for young people, Brave Island, to run a label design competition. We had many amazing entries, and we were blown away by the talent we have here on the Island.

Enlisted the help of young creatives
This year we will be launching Baking Kits with all the ingredients needed to make your own bread, cakes and more at home.

To make these kits a reality we enlisted the help of young creatives to design a cardboard “belly band” label to go around these boxes.

The winner
One entry stood out, that of Emily Wright, 16. We particularly liked that she thought about how her design could be adapted to be used for multiple recipes and used two of our iconic products as her inspiration: the Mr Blobby Biscuit and Gingerbread Man.

It was simple and still fun and we felt it would appeal to a range of ages. Emily won herself a £150 cash prize and her design will be turned into a label and used on our baking kits.

Two runner ups
It was hard to pick just one winner, so we also selected two runner ups, Tirzah Brown, 14, and Camryn Staley, 14.

Tirzah’s design caught our eye as she created a pattern of cakes shaped like the Isle of Wight. Cowes and East Cowes were each topped with cream and fruits!

Camryn’s design was very imaginative as it was a mixture of nautical and baking themes. We will be keeping an eye out on all three as we’re excited to see where they take their creative careers!

We’re told that Tirzah has already landed logo design commissions for local businesses.

Encouraging an essential skill
We feel baking is an essential skill and we want to encourage everyone to have a go. So, alongside our new baking kits we will be launching a new fund for primary schools towards the end of 2023 where local primary schools can apply for free ingredients to run baking lessons for their students.

Teachers will have access to ready-made lesson plans and resources to introduce their students to the joy of baking at home.

Offering something a little different for young creatives
Brave Island were great to partner with to run the competition and we were excited to offer something a little different for young creatives to try out responding to a design brief. We hope to partner up and offer even more competitions in the future.
