Thanks to Maxine from Newport Parish Council for sharing this positive news from the recent meeting. In her own words. Ed
Newport residents were given two inspirational presentations at the Annual Parish Meeting last week.
Tony Murphy from the Newport and Carisbrooke Foodbank and Pete Luther from Revive Newport spoke about the work of the charities and their ongoing need for support.
Foodbank is about more than just food
Newport PC gave a donation of £500 to the Newport Foodbank at the end of 2011 and has given several donations to the Bandnite events. This was a chance to understand how these donations have helped.
Mr Murphy explained that the Foodbank project does not just give out food but aims to help people deal with other problems in their lives. The parish council donation had partly funded the wifi connection at the centre and this had helped a number of people find information and opportunities that had not been available to them before.
Mr Murphy said although he is pleased that the Foodbank are able to help, he is saddened that so many are in need of its services. Foodbank IOW has helped 1,700 people since it started nine months ago and it is estimated that half of those people have been helped through the Newport branch.
Update on Revive Newport
Mr Luther showed a powerpoint of the various work that come under the Revive Newport banner.
This includes Park Life, a three day free fun event for families, Needs and Seeds, a practical service for people who are unable to carry out painting, gardening and DIY and Cafe Nite which is an offshoot of Bandnite and is a youth club for 13-19 year olds.
The Chairman thanked them for such interesting presentations. He said how pleased the parish council were to be able to help such worthwhile charities and wished them every success for the future.
Also at the meeting reports were presented by the Chairman of the parish council and all seven of the IW Councillors. A summary of the year was also given by Sgt Crosby of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team.
