Gurnard Pines swimming pool could be saved – here’s how

Terry Prosser from Gurnard Pines has issued an announcement on behalf of his new company The Phoenix Zone Limited in relation to the pool facilities at the complex in Gurnard.

The pool closed earlier this year after the previous tenant of the leisure complex filed for liquidation.

In his announcement, Mr Prosser began,

“We have been giving consideration to the pool following several people reminding me of the importance of the swimming pool and how much they would use it if it were open.”

Gas costs three times more than expected
Mr Prosser went on to say,

“We have already explained the cost of the pool is expensive and I have now received terms for our gas supply which seems to be coming in at circa £60,000 pa if the pool remains in use.

“This is three times more expensive than we were expecting and pushes our monthly operating costs to circa £25,000.”

He explained that as he was washing up this morning after breakfast he came up with the idea that if all those who want to pool to remain people are willing to pay £10 a day to use the pool and they can get at least 100 people to sign up to membership, he’ll be able to keep the pool open.

£300 per month pool only membership
Mr Prosser added,

“Therefore I would like to put it out there, following several requests to ‘save the pool’  I will be offering ‘pool only membership at £300 per month, but must have a minimum sign up of 100 people meaning that once VAT is paid we are left with £25,000 each month to cover the basic running costs of the pool.

“Initially I just want to see whether there are 100 people out of the 142,000 people that live on the Island that are willing to put their hand in their pocket to keep the pool open.”

Show your interest
He said that if they can achieve this,

“We will then look to partner up with a professional swim school to ensure that local children and adults can continue learning how to swim.

“If you feel you would benefit from us retaining the swimming pool and can afford to spare £10 a day (less than the cost of 20 cigarettes), please send me an e‐mail to enquiries@phoenix‐zone.co.uk and provide your full name, your e‐mail address and a contact telephone number.

“If you know anyone else that is in the same position, please forward this information.”

What happens next
If 100 people agree to the £300 per month membership, Phoenix will send a link to sign up for the pool only membership.

The first £300 payment will be taken straight away and the second payment will be taken one month after they open up the pool.

For example, if you paid your £300 on 27th February and the pool opens on 1st May 2023, your second DD will be taken on 1st June 2023.

If they do not meet the 100 people target sign up they’ll refund all money collected and will continue with their plans to re‐purpose the pool.
