Hadrian's Wall charity cycle ride :

Hadrian’s charity cycle conquered

Many thanks to Fraser for this update on the Hadrian’s Wall cycle challenge. Congratulations to those who took part. Ed

Shanklin residents and keen cyclists Dave Westhead and Fraser McDermott, accompanied by friend Dave Wood who kindly took time out to drive and provide support whilst they attempted to cycle the 174 mile stretch between Ravenglass in Cumbria and South Shields near Newcastle, across the breadth of ‘Hadrian’s Wall Country’ in just thirty-six hours were triumphant in July this year.

Collectively they raised: £1,860.

Fraser, who volunteered at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games said,

“It was our way of celebrating the Games and it’s legacy a year on, whilst raising funds for the Island’s Earl Mountbatten Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.

“The route took us through some absolutely breath-taking scenery and was bursting at the seams with history, our only regret is we didn’t have much chance to stop and take it all in. We were very fortunate that the weather for the most part was on our side and with only one puncture – on the van travelling to the start we were very lucky, said Dave.

“The ‘reconstructed Arbeia Roman Fort’ was a very welcome sight at the finish in South Shields. It took Fraser and Dave just over 33 hours to complete the challenge, 19 hours of that was spent cycling and after a couple of minor diversions, we’d cycled just over 182 miles.

“We’d like to thank everyone who kindly donated and supported us, especially the local island businesses.”
