Executives at Motown Records are sure to be celebrating today as the record label reaches the grand age of 50 years old.
It was on this day back in 1959 that R&B label Tamla Records was founded by Berry Gordy in Detroit. The first hit out of the record label was Come To Me by Marv Johnson.
Eleven months later Tamla Records became what is now known as Motown Record Corporation which is now based in Los Angeles.
Some of the greats coming out of Motown have included Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops , The Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie.
If you’re planning to raise your glass to Motown tonight, why not do it listening to Marv.
