If you’re having a post-Christmas sort out, Wessex Cancer Support would be delighted to receive your donations – particularly good quality clothing, at its Freshwater shop, as it prepares to open its sixth shop in Westbourne, Bournemouth during March.
Wessex Cancer Support’s shops raise £100,000 every year which directly supports local people affected by cancer.
Good quality clothing needed
Mark Ellis, the charity’s Head of Retail, says,
“We’re really grateful to people who bring their preloved donations to us to sell in our shops because they enable us to raise vital funds to support local people affected by cancer.
“As we prepare to open our sixth shop, we’re looking for lots more donations – particularly good quality clothing, to sell. If you’re not sure what you can give, just think, ‘would I buy this from a charity shop?’
“Is it sellable, safe, clean, complete and in good condition? If it is, we’d be delighted to receive it!’
Keep hold of your false teeth
The charity’s shops receive many fantastic donations, but also gets a lot of items it can’t sell because they’re dirty, broken or inappropriate.
These include unclean and torn clothes, incomplete puzzles and even on occasion used toothbrushes and false teeth!
75% of items are unsellable
Volunteers give 250 hours of their time each week to sort and display around 300 bags of donated goods.
Sadly, up to 75 per cent of items are unsellable and it costs the charity £6,000 every year to dispose of them.

You can find Wessex Cancer Support’s Freshwater shop at 4 Moa Place, Freshwater, PO40 9DS.
