Historic steam engines to find a new home in proposed Rookley barn project

Planning consent is being sought for a new barn located on Niton Road, Rookley.

The site, which over a period of years has been cleared of undergrowth and fenced off, had been sold to the current as development potential. The planning statement explains that the site had previous provision to allow for ten bungalows on the plot.

However, the current owner wishes to erect a 12m x 8m barn and new private road access internally to link to the proposed barn.

Storage for historic steam engines and lorries
The barn is intended to allow for sufficient storage space for the applicant’s historic steam engines and lorries to provide a controlled and secure environment to ensure the longevity of these valuable items.

There is, according to the paperwork, no intention to carry out any engineering or mechanical works on the proposed development site and it will be used solely as storage for these historical assets.

Fruit trees and alpacas
There will be planting of fruit trees and the construction of a nature pond, as well as wild flowering on the eastern part of the site.

The northern part of the site will see the erection of a modest open-fronted animal shelter to house alpacas and goats.

Designed to harmonise with the rural setting
The planning statement adds that the design of the proposed barn has been carefully considered to ensure compatibility with the surrounding landscape and immediate surrounding area. The use of green cladding ensures that the proposed development will harmonise with the rural setting.

Although the barn is not directly sited within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the boundary for the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is located directly opposite the proposed site.

The planning statement adds that the applicant has engaged with the local community and parish council over their intentions.
