The programme plays an instrumental role in recognising, guiding, supporting and inspiring talent along their pathway, whatever the destination.
Over 45 High Performance Academy students ranging from aged 12-17 were inspired to excel during a series of workshops at Sandown Bay Academy on Wednesday 11th December.
Three workshops
Southampton Solent University ran two of the three workshops; one on nutrition and one on strength and conditioning. The nutrition workshop taught students about the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition and how to apply this to their own sport.
Lydia Cole, aged 14 said
“It was really helpful learning about nutrition and what to eat before sports competitions.”
Holly Donohue, aged 14 said
“The nutrition workshop was really informative; it taught me how to re-energise myself during sporting activities.”
Carol Macartney ran a yoga workshop that the students were able to draw on techniques learnt and relate them to their own sports.
Ryan Hall, age 13 said
“I learnt some great techniques in yoga for calming down before a football match. The workshops really inspired me to do well in my sport.”
Strength and conditioning workshop
Southampton Solent University students ran a gruelling strength and conditioning practical workshop, which included techniques to improve training methods.
Daisy Faithful, age 13 said
“The conditioning workshop was tough, it trained me how to improve my core strength.”
Ellen Williams, age 14 said
“I really enjoyed the workshops, they have all helped me with my athletics. I learnt new stretches and I am feeling motivated to improve even more.”
Gifted & Talented PE Co-ordinator, Mr Stuart Johnson said
“We pride ourselves on our sporting achievements and hold a high reputation not only on the Isle of Wight but in Hampshire too. The students in the ‘High Performance Academy’ had a fantastic day and were able to learn techniques and tips from highly skilled specialists that will benefit their own sports.”
