An event has been held to commemorate those affected by and caring for people with dementia.
A local group that was set up last year to offer support to people who care for families living with dementia has grown in numbers and support on the Island.
It was recognised that families and carers needed additional support once a family member had been given a dementia diagnosis and so ‘The Circle’ support group was established.
Freeman: Unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for loved ones with dementia
Penny Freeman (pictured above with the High Sheriff), Peer Support Worker for the IOW NHS Trust Dementia Outreach Team, and founder of the group said,
“The Circle is a family that supports the unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for their loved ones with dementia.
“The group was formed because it was felt that families and carers needed additional support at a very emotional and mentally exhausting time. We come together with carers and give them a space to talk about their experiences and listen to others on the same journey as them.
“We now have 31 members who come together each month to seek answers to their concerns and anxieties around caring for a person with dementia and to feel supported.”
Biss: I think the big message that we took away is that you’re not alone
High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, Graham Biss, opened the event held at the Riverside Centre in Newport and had the honour of unveiling a sculpture that will be a permanent reminder at the Centre of the family members that have been lost within the group and to remember those who are still living with dementia every day.
Graham Biss, said,
“Both my parents suffered from dementia, so I very much recognise the journey, which people here today are on in different stages.
“It is a cruel disease, but I think the big message that we took away is that you’re not alone and I think that’s an important message.
“I would like to pay tribute to all the outreach workers and thank you all on behalf of the community, for everything you do.”
Members of The Circle are carers and families of people who are under the care of the Dementia Outreach Service.
