Regular readers and art lovers will remember the excellent Homegrown exhibition, pulled together and curated last year by Lauren Fry.
Well, it’s that time of year and Lauren is once again on the lookout for more equally talented artists to exhibit later this year.
Phenomenal response
Lauren told VB that the response to her call for artists on VB for last years Homegrown was phenomenal.
“It was not only the quantity of interest that was such a pleasant surprise (I had over 20 artists contact me within a couple of weeks) it was the quality as well, practitioners really pushing the boundaries of their medium and demonstrating such original creativity.”
She went on to say, “I wish I could have shown everyone’s work but in the end I selected the 7 artists whose practice I felt best showcased the Island’s contemporary art scene and it resulted in a fantastic show with a great audience response. One comment will always stick in my mind, as a middle-aged gentleman descended the steps into the basement he said “wow, this is like what you’d find in London”.
Appeal for 2010
This year Lauren is looking for artists who work in 3D in paper, fabric or plastic.
They’ll need to spend two weeks during the summer working on a collaborative project creating an immersive environment in the basement of a disused chapel including involvement in running workshops (artists will receive financial support for their time).
Homegrown is pushing once again to bring to the Island an innovative and inviting contemporary art show as part of Ryde Arts Festival 2010.
