Tomorrow night The Ventnor Film Society present Honeydripper at the Ventnor Winter Gardens.
Alabama in the 1950s.
John Sayles uses music as an allegory for social change and it works to great effect in this highly likeable film about the Deep South.
The owner of the Honey Dripper Lounge takes steps to outdo local juke box competition but when he is forced to hire an unknown guitarist, little does he suspect that everybody’s idea of music will be turned upside down.
This is a warm-hearted celebration of communal life where rock’n’roll becomes a joyful assertion of independence, as against the way that the blues represent the stoical acceptance of fate and oppression.
