Horticultural students enhance St James’ Square through community project in Newport

Horticultural students from the Isle of Wight College are making a real difference in Newport, working in partnership with Shaping Newport and award-winning C.A.R. Gardens.

Their efforts focus on enhancing St James’ Square, preparing the planted borders for a fresh replanting.

Giving back to the Island
Craig Ratcliff from C.A.R. Gardens shared details about their first ‘Project Giving Back Some to the Isle of Wight’ (PGBSIOW).

He explained that the team would be returning to St James’ Square in a couple of weeks to support the students as they replant the borders.

“It’s going to be fantastic, and will be such a massive uplift to the square.”

Preparing for new planting
Photos from the project show the team hard at work on the planted borders.

They have been clearing the area, removing any roots that might regrow, adding organic matter, and creating a tilth that will make it easier for the students to plant into.

A community effort
Craig highlighted that this work is being done entirely for free as part of their commitment to the community, the environment, and horticultural education. He added,

“Remember, we are doing all this for free, as part of our commitment to the community, environment and horticulture students. So no moans please, it’s a beautiful thing!”

The project is set to bring a welcome boost to the square, making it a more vibrant and attractive space for the community to enjoy.
