The community based rehabilitation service at St Mary’s Hospital now has a second pulse oximeter, thanks to money-raising efforts at a holiday hotel.
The measures oxygen levels in people in their own homes or nursing homes, who are recovering from injuries or an operation. The £800 cost of the portable equipment was met through a series of events at the Royal Pier Hotel, Sandown – including a much-publicised New Year’s Day dip in the nearby sea by a 16 year old guest.
Delighted at support
Karen Byrne, Intermediate Care Co-Ordinator, said at the official hand-over at the hospital: “We are most grateful to the Friends for making the oxymeter part of their latest approved list of bids from the Island’s NHS. And, of course, we are absolutely delighted over how staff and guests at the Royal Pier have supported our bid.”
This was, in fact, the second oxymeter provided to the rehabilitation service by the Friends over the years, and Karen was confident that both would be well used. Also at the presentation was June Ring, a board member of the Friends who encouraged the Royal Pier’s manager, June O’Mallory, to support the oxymeter campaign.
The latest oxymeter was part of the £110,000-worth of the latest successful bids made to the Friends by the NHS.
