Before running our report yesterday on the Coroner’s outcome of the Inquest into the death of five year old Leon Hamman at St Mary’s Hospital, OnTheWight requested a statement from the IW NHS.
24 hours later, a response has just arrived from the comms team.
Mark Pugh, Executive Medical Director, at Isle of Wight NHS Trust said:
“I would firstly like to express my sincere condolences and sympathy to Leon’s family. I would also be grateful for the opportunity to publicly repeat my personal apologies made during the course of the Coroner’s inquest.
“The Trust takes any case extremely seriously and we have, and will continue to, carefully consider all of the lessons to be learned. I have already given my assurances to the Coroner that the Trust is implementing the important recommendations contained in his report, which have been based on our own findings from an internal investigation. The Coroner has also commented in his report that he is satisfied that this will be carried through and appropriately audited.
“We are a caring organisation that is committed to providing patient-centred and quality care for those using our hospital and its services. We have fully co-operated with the Coroner and would like to offer our reassurances that we are taking appropriate improvements in relation to this case.”
The majority of services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust are commissioned and funded by Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England and Isle of Wight Council.
