Lifesaving charity, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, is calling on supporters to step up to the plate and hold a special fish supper to raise funds for its work.

The RNLI’s Fish Supper campaign is in honour of volunteer lifeboat crew who regularly miss meal times and special occasions with loved ones when their pager calls them away to carry out rescues at sea.

Fish-themed dinner party
The premise is simple – people are encouraged to host a fish-themed dinner party with friends or family between 14-16 October.

Participants make a donation in return for their meal, to raise vital funds for the charity that saves lives at sea.

7,973 people rescued in 2015
In 2015 alone the charity’s lifeboats launched 8,228 times and its volunteers rescued 7,973 people across the UK and Ireland. This includes 348 people who would have died if they hadn’t been saved by the RNLI.

Adele Fuller, RNLI Area Manager, said:

“This is a great opportunity to get together with family and friends to tuck into some fish-themed food and help the RNLI save lives at sea.

“The meals can vary from simple dishes such as fish finger sandwiches or a tuna salad, to a more ambitious steamed sea bass or a lobster thermidor! Whatever the dish, people will be supporting our volunteers who so often abandon their dinner table to assist others in need on the water.”

Proceeds help provide best equipment and training
Guests are invited to make a donation to the RNLI whilst the host cooks up a storm. All proceeds from Fish Supper will help provide the best equipment and training for RNLI volunteers.

Adele continued:

“We regularly hear stories of how our crew members have been called out at inopportune times – even weddings, birthdays and births – to venture into often dangerous waters to rescue people who have found themselves in difficulty.

“We’re asking people to spare a thought for the sacrifice crew make – last year the RNLI saved 348 lives – that’s 348 people who were able to sit down at the dinner table with their loved ones again. It’s only with the public’s support that we could do that.”

Togetherness and team spirit
The importance of togetherness and team spirit is at the heart of the RNLI and is what makes the charity and its volunteers so special. In 2015 RNLI volunteer crew members missed nearly 7,000 meals to rescue people in need of assistance.

Adele said,

“Anyone can take part in the RNLI Fish Supper, no matter what your cooking abilities are. Even if you don’t fancy doing the washing up, there are ways for everyone to get involved!”

Visit an eatery
Supporters don’t have to eat at their own place to enjoy a Fish Supper – they can always visit one of the campaign supporters’ eateries, be it a National Federation of Fish Friers fish and chip shop, a Vintage Inns pub or maybe a Loch Fyne restaurant.
