Improvements to a major four way junction in Newport will get underway in full from 10 October.
Construction work, which is being undertaken by Sainsbury’s as part of the firm’s planning permission to extend its Newport store, will see turning lanes installed on Hunnycross Way, Vicarage Walk and Hunnyhill to help improve traffic flow and safety.
Currently, vehicles often get held up during busy times as they wait for stationary cars to turn.
Two stages of work
The works will take place until the end of November 2011 and then from 9 January until late February 2012. No works will be carried out in December including over the Christmas and New Year period to cut down on disruption during the busy festive period.
Temporary lights will be required during the works and traffic delays will occur especially at peak times.
Paid for by Sainsbury’s
Cllr Edward Giles, Cabinet member responsible for Highways, said the work is being managed and paid for entirely by Sainsbury’s. He said “The superstore is currently undergoing an expansion and the council insisted that, as part of the planning agreement, Sainsbury’s improve the junction as more vehicles will be accessing it.
“The upgrade will not only help reduce waiting times but also improve safety.
“Unfortunately there will be some disruption while the works are carried out but we have worked with Sainsbury’s to ensure that no alteration works are undertaken during December in the busy pre Christmas period.”
