Iain McKie, also known as “The Loon”, has set himself an extraordinary challenge: cycling from Trafalgar Square in London to the Lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar in Southern Spain.
This journey, which spans a daunting 1,500 to 1,600 miles, is no small feat. Iain plans to undertake this ambitious route alone, equipped with just a bike, a map, and a sleeping bag. His aim is to complete the journey in under three weeks, with a personal goal of two weeks and four days.
A gruelling path ahead
Iain’s route will see him tackling a variety of extreme conditions. From mountainous terrain to the potential of scorching heat and torrential rain, this challenge is set to push him to his physical and mental limits.
Despite the scale of the task, Iain is undeterred and explains,
“I am not a cyclist, nor am I a member of any cycle club.”
This makes his endeavour all the more remarkable, as he acknowledges the immense challenge that lies ahead.
Riding for a cause
The purpose of Iain’s journey extends beyond personal achievement. He is cycling to raise funds for six charities, encouraging people to donate as he pedals southward.
Underlining the importance of the causes he supports, Iain notes,
“Our lives have all been affected in many ways by hideous diseases and conditions.”
He hopes that his efforts will inspire others to contribute to these worthy charities.
A test of willpower
Iain has deliberately chosen a challenge that will test him to the extreme, both physically and mentally. While he is aware of the enormity of what he is about to undertake, he believes he is as prepared as possible to give it his best shot.
For those who know him, his quirky and off-the-wall personality is well recognised. However, Iain’s determination and generosity are equally renowned among his friends and supporters.
Support along the journey
As he embarks on this monumental challenge, Iain will be sharing updates on his progress through social media and his website site, where you’ll also be able to donate to one of the chosen charities.
He expresses gratitude to everyone who takes the time to follow his journey, adding,
“I hope that a few quid is raised along the way.”
