Lisa Hollyhead on a plane

Inspirational blind and hard of hearing woman flies plane and abseils down the Spinnaker Tower

Imagine you can’t see and also can’t hear anyone speak…
Now, imagine flying a plane!
You could even abseil down the Spinnaker Tower too!

It sounds impossible, but not for Sight for Wight’s One Wish Campaign because they intend to make sure their members all get a crack at fulfilling their One Wish. And they have started at the top, with their registered blind/hard of hearing CEO flying a plane.

A reputation for being utterly fearless
Of course, Lisa Hollyhead, who was the first ever blind woman in the UK to qualify as a Chartered Accountant, does have a reputation for being utterly fearless, so saying she can’t do something is always likely to make her prove you wrong!

Abseiled 100 metres down the Spinnaker Tower
And she didn’t stop there. Lisa launched the One Wish Fundraising Campaign not with another wish, but by conquering her own fear of heights and abseiling 100 metres down the Spinnaker Tower in hair-raising conditions, which speaks volumes about her determination and indomitable spirit.

Hollyhead: A distinct advantage not being able to see how high up I was
As Lisa said,

“It was a distinct advantage not being able to see how high up I was, but taking that first step off the wind-swept walkway was terrifying and yet thrilling!”

Like all charities, Sight for Wight exists to support the needs of their members.

A chance to go that extra mile
However, Lisa came up with the One Wish Campaign to go that extra mile and give their members the chance to fulfil one of their wishes; something they really want to do but can’t because of their sight loss.

So, what better way to officially launch the Campaign than to take on the first challenge herself and fulfil her dream of piloting a plane – flying for 30 minutes at 2,500 ft over Hampshire! And what better way to launch the fundraising than by overcoming a very real fear.

Feats would challenge most able-bodied people
Both these amazing feats would challenge the most able-bodied of people amongst us, but they took place with a loud and clear message that the Sight for Wight One Wish Campaign is officially launched.

But Lisa has just one more thing to ask all visually impaired Islanders:

“What is your one wish?
