Inteliports drone trial in Cowes postponed for additional resident consultation this week

Last updated:

The commencement of a new drone delivery pilot has been delayed following concern raised by local residents.

The Isle of Wight council Regeneration project team has today (Wednesday) issued a ‘thank you’ to local residents, businesses and councillors in Cowes for sharing their feedback regarding the upcoming Inteliports drone trial in Mornington Road Car Park. They say they have written to residents and stakeholder who have already responded to the consultation to meet with them in person to discuss their concerns.

First reported in April
The proposal for a new drone delivery service across the Solent was first reported by OnTheWight in April 2024.

IWC: Decided to delay the start of the trial
A spokesperson for Isle of Wight council said today,

“We appreciate the time taken to express concerns and have heard feedback. We have therefore decided to delay the start of the trial for one week to allow an opportunity to meet with residents in person to discuss concerns.

“We will be holding a resident’s event this week. We are using a ticketing system to ensure that we prioritise the attendance of local residents.

“We ask that priority is given to local residents in the area surrounding the trial location.”

Members of the media are being offered one-to-one slots after working hours on Friday, presumably following meetings held with residents.

Sounds like they are only delaying it to speak in person to those who raised concerns, rather than scrapping it.

And that is just a pointless excercise as nothing will change and the locals will still be pi55ed off :(

As soon as this is up and running it will be applauded for its efficiency, speed and simplicity. If you’d asked a bunch of localised NIMBYs 70 years ago if they wanted white vans, internet shopping, Uber, Google, Apple, Spotify, CDs, lithium ion battery technology, smart phones, QR codes – all of which have created small and positive revolutions for engaged users – they’d have said never… Read more »

Agreed. Almost every new idea on the Island bring an immediate negative response and the formation of an action group to stop it.

Nothing wrong with the new idea- it is to be applauded as some of the toxic chemicals used in treatment of cancer/pet scans have a short shelf life. It’s the location that is totally wrong. Chose a business building with a flat roof. SIMPLE.

Brilliant idea. Assuming it’s structurally capable of taking added weight; and assuming IOWC own the building; or assuming the Council can take out a lease on said space at great legal expense, paying rent for it; and assuming accessibility 24 hours a day is feasible; and assumin* staff facilities are available on the roof; and assuming there are no health and safety issues flying near multi level… Read more »
