Two Island parish Clerks have recently returned from an international conference in Reno, Nevada.
John Whitney and Maxine Yule were among 600 delegates from ten countries attending the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Conference held at the end of May.
The party of ten from the UK included three Society of Local Council Clerk officers and five bursary winners from a national competition.
Representing the Island
John Whitney was attending as this year’s national President of the Society of Local Council Clerks as well as representing Shalfleet Parish Council. Maxine Yule, who is Clerk to Gatcombe and Newport Parish Council, was one of bursary winners.
John said “Much useful work was achieved to broaden international links between the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and our Society with the achievement of winning an agreement for international recognition of our Institute of Local Council Management professional grades of membership.”
The conference theme was education and included a number of world renowned guest speakers.
Maxine Yule said “The quality of the seminars was extremely high and the topics discussed were both interesting and informative. It was also a pleasure to put the Isle of Wight on the world map as many of the American delegates had not heard of us.”
Although the conference took up most of the week there was an opportunity for John and Maxine to see the local area including Virginia City and Lake Tahoe.
