Isle of Wight VS Isle of Man
At Cowes High School last night, the Isle of Wight’s women’s basketball team played a tense final game against the Isle of Man team. Both teams were a proved good match for each other and the scores were very close throughout the game.
Before the game started, the teams practised their shooting and got their adrenaline pumping for the big game. The Isle of Wight team were determined to win their final match of the Island Games this year.
First quarter
During the first three minutes of the first quarter, Becky Healey (N°13) from the IOW team scored a basket, then two more points when allowed free throws. Another free throw was then let for the IOW team, due to a foul from the opposing team, Rachael Mew (N°10) scored a point.
Second quarter
The second quarter began and the Isle of Wight team looked out to win. Rachel Almond (N°6-Team Captain) attempted to get a basket from the boundary line and successfully throws it in, making that the best score of the game!
However the Isle of Man team upped their game and managed to score 14 points for their team bringing the score to 16-14, to the home team.
Battling out to win
The two rival teams battled it out during the game, making it a very exciting but a tense game to watch.
Within 6:28 minutes of the third quarter, the score was 20-21 to the home team making the teams gruelling to gain victory, resulting with many fouls and stumbles by the two teams.
Fourth quarter
Kaylee Long (N°12) grabbed a speedy basket before Rachel Almond managed to score four points for the team, within three minutes of the quarter.
While the IOW team gaining some hoops, so were the IOM. The score was 29-29 and the game was coming to an end.
All the Basketballer’s had the look of sheer determination on their faces, they were dribbling back and forth down the court, trying to get a last few points, they didn’t want to let their team down.
Last few minutes
The IOM were in the lead by one point until they were given free shots were they scored extra two points, this put then in the lead. The Isle of Wight players were fixed on getting just three more goals to win this game.
The last few seconds of the game were close and the Isle of Man scored once more.
Final results
The final score of the game was 34 – 38.
The Isle of Wight woman’s basketballers were good competition for the Isle of Man players, having only been playing together as a whole team for five weeks, the IOW did an impressive job and were motivated the whole way through no matter what happened.
Rachael Mew (IOW team) said: “Today was totally different, we were more pumped up and the adrenaline was going, we were just out to prove ourselves.”
They definitely proved themselves and will be very good competitors for the next Island Games.
