In aid of Mountbatten Isle of Wight, a team of seven rowers and a cox will represent the Island at The Great River Race, on Saturday, 12th September 2026.
The Island Harbour-based Island Gig Rowers, will row from Millwall Docks to Richmond, along the River Thames, setting off just after 11am.
In 2025, their challenge took three hours and 41 minutes.
Sandie is rowing in memory of her husband, Dennis, who was cared-for by Mountbatten Isle of Wight. She said,
“It’s like a marathon. Your legs and arms get wobbly as you go on.”
Sandie added,
“He would have thought I was crazy, as usual!
“The most incredible view is coming under Tower Bridge and to see those spectacular buildings. You get a different perspective from the river.”
Around 270 boats will be taking part, leaving at staggered start times and crewed by rowers from around the world. The route covers just over 21 miles along the iconic river, through the heart of the capital city.
Sandie said,
“Mountbatten Isle of Wight is an Island charity and everybody, at some time in their lives, will be touched by Mountbatten.”

Mountbatten Isle of Wight provides 24/7 care for over 2,500 people in any one day. 85 per cent of that care is in people’s homes and through day services/outpatients in the John Cheverton Centre community space. The rest is delivered on Mountbatten’s specialist inpatient unit.
