Road closed sign and boulder cliff fall in Lower Gills Cliff Road, Ventnor

Island Roads confirms Lower Gills Cliff Road to remain closed during graben works

Lower Gills Cliff Road will not be reopened prior to the two-week road closure for sewer works at the graben in late June.

Island Roads say that earlier this week a specialist rope team attended the area of the rockfall, on lower Gills Cliff Road, to carry further survey work.

A spokesperson for Island Roads told News OnTheWight,

“This work will help finalise the design of a safety scheme that will protect road users from falling rocks and enable us to re-open this section.

“We can assure residents that we are acutely aware of the effects of the current access issues affecting Ventnor and we are working hard to bring about a solution at Gills Cliff Road as soon as we can.”

They went on to say,

“Unfortunately, given the nature of the work in front of us and the remaining risks to road users, we will not be able to re-open Gills Cliff Road before the Southern Water work at the Graben begins.”

St Lawrence Shute
The spokesperson also confirmed that during the two week closure of Newport Road (at the graben) there were no current plans to add temporary traffic lights at St Lawrence Shute.

This route is being used more and more by locals seeking to avoid the long tailbacks at Ocean View Road and upper Gills Cliff Road.

However, they say they will,

“Constantly review the access issues currently affecting Ventnor and will take action as necessary.”
