Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Isle of Arts: Lots in store for Sensational Sunday

OnTheWight are proud to once again be sponsors for the Isle of Arts Festival.

There is so much on offer, we’re sure that there’ll be something to interest everyone. The opening night is filled with a diverse range of live music as well as spoken word and storytelling. Saturday’s offerings include workshops for the kids, film, music and more spoken word.

And so to Sunday ….

Ukulele extravaganza
If you like music and you like making things then your first stop of the day should be to Utterly Butterly Ukulele :check out the Utterly Butterly Ukulele Project. You’ll be shown how to make a Ukulele out of an Utterly Butterly tub, a piece of wood, and fishing line for strings. It’s fully functional and tunable and is played the same as any conventional ukulele. There are two chances to get involved, at midday and then again at 3pm. Both take place at The Boathouse.

If you do make your very own Ukulele then you’ll be invited to take part in a mass Ukulele performance at 6pm to help set a world record in the Isle of Arts Marquee.

This’ll be followed with the most excellent Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you grab yours as soon as possible.

More live music
Settling into the Isle of Arts Marquee at 2.30pm will be the folks from The Old Thumper Jazz Band. The Old Thumper Jazz Band is a top rate Dixieland band playing exciting, foot tapping, danceable, happy jazz music reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s Chicago era. Listen to favourites like At The Jazz Band Ball, Basin Street Blues, Darktown Strutters and more!

Over at Ventnor Arts Club from 3pm something a little different with Claude Bourbon playing Medieval and Spanish blues guitar. This French-born guitarist grew up in Switzerland where he was classically trained, before further exploring the guitar without the limitations of written music and delving headlong into folk, blues, jazz and rock music.

Theatre and film
Would you like to “brush up your Shakespeare” but don’t have time to see all 37 plays or read all 154 sonnets? Then come and enjoy the highlights of the Bard’s work in Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits at 3.30pm at the Ventnor Baptist Church.

Artist and Model - 230Ventnor Arts Club will be hosting a screening of The Artist & The Model at 5.30pm. In a secluded French border town during the Nazi occupation of WWII, an ageing artist, Marc Cros (Jean Rochefort), is once again inspired to pick up his tools after his wife Lea (Claudia Cardinale) brings home a refugee on the run from Franco’s Spain, the beautiful but naïve Merce (Aida Folch). Amidst his peaceful, hilltop idyll, an unlikely friendship develops between the young girl, just starting out in life, and the old man who senses his end is approaching.

There’s more live music from 6.30pm with Chris Watkins playing Slide Guitar at The Boathouse.

Remembering the First World War
As part of the centenary commemorations of the First World War, St Catherine’s Church will be host to The Pity of War 7.30pmMusic at

In this unique performance, violinist Matthew Trusler is joined by the internationally renowned pianist Martin Roscoe in performances of sonatas by Elgar, Janáček and Debussy, all written during the Great War.

Accompanying the music are readings, spoken by screen and stage legend Timothy West, which draw on Wilfred Owen’s letters and poems, mainly written between 1917 and 1918. They reveal Owen’s moral courage and humanity triumphing over the worst possible conditions. The readings are interspersed with original recordings of wartime music hall songs, familiar to every soldier on the Western Front.

Headline comedy from Rich Hall
Of course, the event that many of you will be heading to is the return of Rich Hall at 8.45pm in the Isle of Arts Marquee.

Rich Hall :Rich Hall opened the very first Isle of Arts Festival back in 2011 and had the audience in stitches from beginning to end. He’s sure to be a popular choice, so make sure you grab your tickets soon.

The council asks for our opinion and when an acclaimed academic group give theirs they degrade it as valueless…oh the paradox

How can Brown comment on the library consultation when it only finished hours ago? How can he make recommendations without having collated what the public have to say??

Because it was already decided- this council do not understand the meaning of the word “Consultation”.

Well at least we know now why Westminster House isn’t moving to the Gouldings – Its because “The future of The Gouldings + Adelaide will be carefully looked at in the near future.” I.e. they are the next for the chop!! So much for listening to the public Roger – you obviously decided that not only will you close Westminster House (or even better, sell it), you’re… Read more »

I dont think they will close Adelaide/Gouldings. More likely it will be transferred to a housing provider/social enterprise.,

The council is moving away from being a provider and when Ian Anderson was posed the question about Gouldings his reply was much along those lines.

It gets the council out of having to pay redundancy, although what effect it has in the pension fund is anybody;s guess.

All of what they say can be taken with a pinch of salt. They sometimes lie, they often lecture, they pretend only they have the answers, as they confuse those who are easily confused. Don’t fall for it, their agenda is decided, the course is set. Keep fighting the *******.

‘Cllr Giles – £200k saving will be needed if floating bridge not charged for. Southampton Uni – not professional consultants, but students. We see no value in seeking this consultancy.’ Am I right in thinking that this group were looking at doing the analysis for free? If no cost then surely anything they add to the debate would hold some value? And more than likely provide immense… Read more »

These are not just students but post-graduates who could well be consultants.

Pugh has such a low opinion of students because he failed to complete his education

Yes folks, Giles realised his days in office were numbered if they introduced pedestrian charging on the floating bridge. I suspect the heat he felt at the recent meeting helped to convince him. Well done all who created it :) The Dave Burbage Ltd issue will not go away. Simply saying Burbage ‘does a lot more than someone in a similar position’ getting half as much wonga… Read more »

Remember, Cllr Giles only had a majority of 16 votes at the last election and he actually only recieved the votes of 13% of the electorate. He needs to worry!

Quote from above…… “Cllr Pugh: We won’t normally talk about employees, but will in this case. Agency costs £30k year. Not paid now. External auditor OK with it”. So how much exactly did it cost to get the council out of the contract with the agency, there must have been a final payment or penalty clause and some cost to the taxpayer in this, we as taxpayers… Read more »

Cllr Giles: I’ve made representations on behalf on the people of the town. See it as a floating bridge for a chain ferry. Practicality is also an issue East Cowes meeting referenced again – this time on libraries Saying people have volunteered to run the East Cowes library at what point in the meeting did anyone say they would volunteer to man the library,if my memory is… Read more »

I can confirm that at the meeting in East Cowes Town Hall Clly Giles was specifically asked what had happened to the £25 million reserve that the council had when the Tories came to power- his reply was categorical- we still have the £25 Million- now either he was lying or Cllr Pugh wasx lying when he said £5 Million. Is it not a criminal offence for… Read more »

Maybe not lying but he certainly gave a false impression. As was made clear last night most of the money is set aside (and has to be) for particular purposes. The spendable reserve is just over £2m. If we had £25m we would have something that could be used to save some of these cuts from being made.

Collins English Dictionary:- CONSULT v. go to for information or advice… I understand the people of the Isle of Wight have INFORMED and ADVISED the Council of their strong views on the the consultation document A New Chapter-a fresh direction for the Islands Libraries. The few at the top of the IOW Council have utterly disregarded this response. They are not answerable to anyone it seems. If… Read more »
