Thanks to Gilly for this latest announcement for Isle of Arts 2012, taking place in Ventnor in four weeks time! Ed
One hundred years to the day since Bram Stoker’s death, Isle of Arts will be hosting a fascinating celebration of the life and work of creator of Dracula on 20 April.
Our evening of chills and vampire thrills kicks off with a unique glimpse into the life of the man behind the most infamous Count in history with a personal introduction by the novelist’s great grandson, Noel Dobbs, and a talk from Stoker expert Brian J. Showers to be held in Ventnor Library.
Bram Stoker has a unique connection to the Island – not only did he visit the poet Lord Alfred Tennyson at Farringford – the Stoker family has a home here. In fact, it was Noel Dobbs, who lives in Seaview, who recently discovered the author’s private notebook revealing some of the origins for the chilling Dracula character. It is published this month as The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker: The Dublin Years.
One lucky visitor to our event will receive a signed copy of the new Bram Stoker journal. Come and listen”¦. if you dare!
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror
Later as darkness falls, we will be screening the original Dracula movie – Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror in St Catherine’s Church. This 1922 silent classic was the first of many cinematic outings for Stoker’s vampire Count, but it is still widely considered to be one of the very best.
Starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok and directed by FW Murnau, Nosferatu is a taut psychological insight into duality between man’s civilised and bestial natures. To enhance the on-screen tensions, our presentation will be accompanied by live music from pianist Mick Smith.

A glass of wine is included in the ticket price and a selection of garlicky nibbles courtesy of the Garlic Farm will help to keep any vampires at bay.
