Isle of Wight bike project offers access affordable bikes in time for Christmas

Local community project ‘On Yer Bike Isle of Wight’ is dedicated to getting everybody cycling regardless of age or ability.

On Saturday 4th December they are teaming up with YMCA to host a free, one-off event for the community to access bike repairs, see maintenance demonstrations and pick up an affordable bike in time for Christmas from their refurbished sale.

Many health benefits
Cycling has never been more important for both physical and mental health, and the health of the environment. The Island offers wonderful opportunities to cycle and is frequently named one of the top cycling destinations in the world.

Since the pandemic, many have recognised these health benefits leading to an increase in demand and subsequent global shortage of bikes since the onset of the pandemic. Unfortunately, this has meant lots of people have been unable to get hold of affordable bikes.

Dawson: Aim is to help make experience as inclusive as possible
John Dawson, who founded On Yer Bike in 2020, commented,

“These pop-up events are a great opportunity for people of all abilities to find out how they can make the most out of cycling.

“We sell affordable refurbished bikes to people who have never even ridden before, as well as supporting experienced cyclists to keep their bike in tip top shape.

“Our aim is to help make the experience as inclusive as possible, so there’s always something for everyone.”

Corina: Learning to ride a bike is a pivotal moment
Emma Corina, of YMCA, said,

“We’re so pleased to be able to support local projects like this that are so important to the community.

“From our extensive work with families and children of all ages, we particularly know how much learning to ride a bike is a pivotal moment.

“Access to cycling helps young children grow into healthy, confident young people. We’re looking forward to a lively event.”

Where and when
The event will take place on Saturday 4th December 2021 at YMCA Winchester House. Entry is free.

Visitors can explore the bike workshop and sale as well as enjoy tea, coffee, and Christmas snacks.

Donations of unwanted bikes are being sought ahead of the event. If you can help, the drop off point is at YMCA Winchester House, Shanklin, PO37 6HY. Contact them on 01983 862441 to arrange.
