Isle of Wight blood donations are above the national average

OnTheWight has been supporting the Blood Donor Service for many years, sharing details of donations sessions on our event listings site.

We were pleased to hear from Brian Norgate at Blood Donor service that “We always get walk-ins from your site and the Isle of Wight is an incredible place for donors way.”

Brian went on to say that the number of donors on the Isle of Wight is above the national average, so well done all those who take the time to donate their blood.

6,374 units of whole blood in 2012
So far this year, 2013, they have already collected 754 units of whole blood in just eight sessions. Back in 2012, they collected a whopping 6,374 units of whole blood.

Once you’ve donated your blood, BDS separate the blood into red cells, white cells and platelets, so each donation can save up to three lives.

According to Brian they return about 300 units of red cells to the Island each month and it is used in operations, road traffic incidents or care of patients.
