Bowls Isle of Wight: Game ResultsCongratulations to Adam Clark
Following on from his selection for the England under 25s team, he has now been selected for his second appearance in the under 18s championships to be played in Newport, Wales in October. He has been selected to play the singles matches.

His selection for the under 25s meant travelling to Londonderry to play.

The travelling seemed to have no effect on him, as his play was very impressive, playing lead in the fours, the first game against Wales was lost by 23 shots to 14, the next game was against Scotland who they by 23 shots to 15. The final match in the series was against Ireland which they won by 33 shots to 13.

Peter Dunston Trophy
This trophy is given in remembrance of Peter Dunston who was one of the county’s finest bowlers and a strong supporter of all County activities. It is in recognition of players entering the County competitions,m points are awarded for progress after the last eight in the local rounds and for progress through the National rounds.

This year the winner is Jack Berry of Shanklin who gaine thirteen points, he was closely followed by Adam Clark of Cowes Medina who had twelve points and Paul Dickinson also of Cowes Medina on eleven.

Knock Out Competitions
The main knockout cup was this year disputed by Sandown ‘A’ and Plessey ‘A’. The match towards the end became very competitive, with just three ends to go the score showed that Sandown has a three shot advantage, however Plessey did not give up, they played on to win, but at 21 ends, the score was level at 21 shots each.

This meant that all three rinks had to play just one extra end. The result of these extra ends was that Sandown had won, winning on two of the extra ends.

Final League Results
Men

The first division title went to the last match of the season to be decided, Plessey ‘A’ travelled to Ventnor needing ten points to clinch the title and wrest it away from Cowes Medina who had won it for the previous six years. The result was in doubt right up to the last wood. Pleesey had won and hold the title for the first time in their history.

Relegated from the first division was Westland ‘A’. They are replaced by Bembridge ‘A’ who bounce back to the top flight just one year after relegation.

Relegated from the second division were Ryde Marina ‘B’ and Plessey ‘D’ who are replaced by Warner’A’ and Bembridge ‘B’.

In the Afternoon Leagues, Division 0ne was won by Ryde Marina ‘E’ with Newport B as runners -up, while the second division was won by Camp Hill ‘C’ with Plessey ‘E’ as runners-up.

Bembridge Bowling Club Finals 2010
With a successful Staddlestones Bembridge Week the previous week, the Club turned its attentions to the Finals of its Club Competitions on Sunday.

Once again the weather together with well tended greens provided an excellent day of bowls for competitors and spectators alike. The well planned programme for the day’s proceedings accommodated for the four players appearing in three Finals each and ensured that only one Final needed to be held over to the following day.

In the first Final, the Mixed Triples, David Lowe, Alan Emery and Phyl Liddiard proved no match for their rivals Pat Tainsh, Paul Green and Jack Liddiard who ran out easy winners by 28-3 shots.

The Mixed Beginners Singles again saw Paul Green playing against David Lowe. Finding himself 6-0 down after 4 ends David rallied to level the match but was then unable to hold Paul who ran out winner by 22-12 shots after 21 ends. In the Mixed New Championship Singles, Daphne Lacey proved worthy winner over Steve Tutton.

Trailing by 12-5 shots after 13 ends, Daphne then gradually reduced the deficit and sealed the match by winning 5 consecutive ends to finish 21-18 after 27 ends.

The Men’s 2 Wood Singles provided an entertaining match between Club President Jack Liddiard and former President Don Sansom. Leading 12-7 after 17 ends, Jack held on to win 13-10 shots after 20 ends after a late comeback by Don. Joan Benford had little difficulty in winning the Ladies 2 Wood Singles running out winner over Marie Maher by 17-3 shots.

The Veterans 2 Wood singles saw the almost annual tussle between Ken Davis and John Tolley. Whilst evenly matched in the later stages John was unable to make up his early setback of being 7-0 down after 5 ends with Ken winning the match 16-9 after 18 ends.

The Final of ‘The Mallett’, a newly introduced event in memory of Harold Mallett was contested by Bernie Allen and Ken Davis. Bernie started well winning the first three ends but Ken’s consistent play saw him run out winner at 8-6 shots in this single wood, best of 15 shots competition.

The Mixed Pairs Final saw Colin and Di Vines playing Don Sansom and Margaret McKenna. After trailing 6-2 after 6 ends, Don and Margaret played well to pull the score back to 8 shots all after 13 ends, before Di and Colin took the game 17-12 shots.

The Ladies Pairs saw Gay and Jenni Allen facing Phyl Liddiard and Juliet Roberson. After trailing through the early stages of the game, Gay and Jenni scored 5 on end 14 to take the lead 14-11, and scoring in 5 of the next 7 ends went on to win 20-15 shots.

In the absorbing Men’s Chosen Pairs, Steve Tutton and Paul Green played Pat Maher and Colin Vines. With honours even at 9 shots all 8 ends, Pat and Colin drew ahead to lead 15 -9 shots after 11 ends before Steve and Paul levelled the game once more at 16 shots all after 16 ends. But after taking 4 shots on end 18, Pat and Colin were able to hold on to win 21 -20 shots after the 21 ends.

The Men’s Championship saw Graham Bridger playing Ken Davis. After Graham started well to lead 8-0 shots after six ends, Ken was unable to recover from this early setback, with the game finishing in Graham’s favour 22-14 shots after 21 ends. The Ladies Championship saw a similar final score between Marguerite Burfitt and Ladies Captain Marie Maher. This time though, Marguerite who found herself 9-2 down after 5 ends then played herself back into a winning position by taking 12 of the next 16 ends to win 21-14 shots after 21 ends.

In the Men’s Drawn Pairs played in difficult conditions on Monday, David Lowe and Jack Liddiard proved too strong for John Browning and Colin Vines, running out winners by 31-9 shots after 19 ends.

Following the Finals, Medals were presented to Winners and Runners-up by Jack Liddiard, Club President.
