Congratulations to everyone at the Isle of Wight’s Carnival Learning Centre who have just been selected to take part in the official opening of the UK Centre for Carnival Arts in Luton which takes place later this year.
The Carnival team will be responsible for one fifth of the procession that will include 200 specially designed costumes and floats representing Carnival Queens of the World.
It’s estimated that there will be around 20,000 people attending the official opening of the UK Carnival Centre and the IW team will be on stage performing for five minutes in front of this huge audience.
Judging by past performance, they certainly know how to impress and working with Fratelli Cinquini, leading scenographers and float builders from the Viareggio Carnival in Italy must have stood them in good stead.
We understand that the team will create a five metre high float and 40 spectacular costumes.
The theme of the carnival piece is ‘Europa’, inspired by the mythological story of a woman abducted by Zeus in the form of a tame white bull to become the first queen of Crete.
Frankie Goldspink, Isle of Wight council carnival arts development officer said:
“To have been selected for this prestigious commission to represent Europe at such a high profile world class event is both an honour and a privilege. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Isle of Wight’s rich carnival culture as well as its talent and creativity in front of an international audience.”
You can find out more by attending the project launch next week. Member of the public are welcome from 7pm on Wednesday 21 January 2009, at The Carnival Learning Centre, Westridge, Ryde to find out how they can get involved.
