Thorness Bay by Jane Harrigan
Thirteen plovers lined like sentinels
on peeling varnished gunnels.
Saffron sea poppies drink from silver sand,
as spume sprays clinker hulls.
Brine foam creeps nearer up an ever-changing shoreline
towards dog roses clinging to the low crumbling cliff, their pale pink petals scattering on a sea breeze.
The early summer samphire is not yet salty.
Rock oysters and cockles pepper the blue slipper shallows
and mermaids’ purses hide galleon coins
inside their leathery sacks.
I hear the oystercatcher
calling me towards a turquoise sea,
as I comb the flotsam treasures that
drift like dreams through Thorness Bay.
