Isle of Wight council leader addresses crisis in local NHS dentistry provision

Phil Jordan shares this latest news, in his own words. Ed

The Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Phil Jordan has written to the Integrated Care Board expressing is serious concerns about the state of dentistry provision on the Island.

Following a Full Council debate on Wednesday 18th September where a motion was presented and passed by Councillors, Councillor Jordan has written to the Chair of the Board setting out the key factors that are failing Islanders in dental health care.

Jordan: I have to speak out in representing our Island community
Speaking yesterday (Wednesday), he said,

“Councillors are concerned and have made their views clear.

“I have to speak out in representing our Island community, pointing out where we should be able to receive a better service, have access to a dentist under NHS provision and demand that the ICB implement satisfactory provision that offers an acceptable level of dentistry provision for our Islanders, young and old, alike.”

Councillor Jordan pointed out that across England 93 per cent of commissioned dentistry has been delivered.

On the Island, the level of commissioned dentistry delivered was as low as 78 per cent. The lowest delivery rate in the Southeast region.

He said,

“We cannot continue to be bottom of the pile in dentistry provision for our Island and our residents, many of whom depend on NHS treatment as a necessity, not a choice.

“I am asking and expecting that the ICB put into place strategies and actions that address this situation and help those in need with a satisfactory or even better, good, dentistry provision on our Island. We should have, nor expect, no less.”
