Isle of Wight council seeks new director of Public Health to enhance local service

Last updated:

The Isle of Wight council’s Cabinet has decided to recruit a new director of Public Health to lead the Island’s Public Health service. The role is currently held by Simon Bryant.

Earlier this month, Cabinet members considered the future of Public Health leadership and made the decision to bring the role in-house.

End of partnership with Hampshire
The current partnership with Hampshire County council will not be renewed when it ends in August.

This change has prompted the need for a new leadership structure to ensure continuity in the Island’s Public Health service.

A direct approach to Public Health leadership
Cabinet members explored various options, including potential new partnership models.

They ultimately decided that direct employment of a director of Public Health would provide greater flexibility, stability, and improvements in service delivery.

The council now aims to recruit a highly qualified candidate for this crucial statutory role.

Optimism remains high about attracting top talent, given the Island’s positive reputation in public health.

Strengthening the Public Health team
The new director will receive additional specialist support to enhance the existing Public Health team.

This move will strengthen leadership and drive continued improvements in public health services across the Island.

Commitment to high-quality outcomes
Councillor Debbie Andre, Cabinet member for Public Health, welcomed the decision.

She said,

“With the Island in a stronger position in relation to our Public Health responsibilities, now is a sensible time to consider the future of our Public Health leadership.

“We need to ensure we continue to deliver high-quality outcomes for Island residents with minimal disruption to Public Health services.

“This decision underscores our commitment to maintaining high standards in Public Health services and addressing the specific needs of the Isle of Wight community.”
