Isle of Wight Driving Licence renewal: Where and how can you get it done?

If you live on the Isle of Wight and need to have your Driving Licence renewed, News OnTheWight has the information you need. Amazingly there’s only one place on the whole Island you can get it done.

Why’s it needed?
A while back the UK Government decided that you’d have to renew your driving licence every ten years.

If you have a valid passport you can do it online. If not, you have the choice of doing it by post or you can take it to specific Post Office branches.

Isle of Wight only has one location
This being the Isle of Wight, at the time of publishing this article, there’s now a really limited choice as to where you can get it done in person – so limited in fact that there’s only one – and it’s in Ryde.

Known locally as Mellish’s, it’s the one that’s on Ryde High Street, at the top of the town, just past the road with the cinema – actually opposite the side road, Newport Street. It’s next to Wight’s Fish and Chip shop.

Photo service
The added advantage of the Post Office route is that they’ll take the photo you need for your driving licence, without you having to hunt around to have one taken.

The process is remarkably simple – all you have to do is take along your old driving licence. They have a photo booth all set up and it’s a really swift process. Once the photo has been taken, you just sign with a digital pen (that will go on your new card) and pay your money. At the time of publishing (July 2021) the cost was £21.50 (including DVLA fees).

They then post it off for you and you should have your new Driving Licence card delivered back to you in about ten days.

In the meantime you are given a paper receipt to show in case you are asked.

Even if you don’t drive, having a Driving Licence is handy to use as photo ID for setting up a new bank account etc.
