During a debate in the House of Commons on Monday, Joe Robertson, Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East, raised the issue of funding for creative industries in smaller regions.
Speaking during the discussion on the sector’s financial support, he asked the Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport whether grassroots projects outside major cities, such as those on the Isle of Wight, would receive the funding they need.
He specifically referenced efforts to establish a film studio on the Island and called for financial backing to help bring the project to life.
Minister responds to call for funding
Chris Bryant, the Minister of State, responded by acknowledging that he had already heard about a film studio in the East Wight constituency.
He said the Government remains committed to expanding film studio space across the country, noting that the UK is approaching a level of studio capacity that rivals Hollywood.
He invited Mr Robertson to meet with the Department to discuss what specific support could be offered.
The film studio is planned for the Isle of Wight West ward, and the Labour MP for IW West, Richard Quigley, told OnTheWight,
“Joe has very kindly offered for me to take his place in a meeting and I’ve contacted Chris Bryant to arrange something.”
Challenges for film studio development
Mr Bryant highlighted two key challenges that have historically hindered film studio development: business rates and planning applications.
He said there has been progress on business rates over the past year, reaching what he described as a “much more sensible position”.
He also noted that planning applications have often proved difficult, citing the Government’s recent £25 million investment in the Crown Works studio in Gateshead as an example of efforts to support the industry.
Medina Studios has already gained planning permission from Isle of Wight council in September 2024 and are in the process of securing the remainder of funding required.
Next steps for the Isle of Wight
Mr Robertson’s comments mark a further step towards securing support for a film studio on the Isle of Wight.
With the Minister open to further discussions, it remains to be seen whether Government backing will materialise for the project.
