An Isle of Wight filmmaker has shared details of one of his latest adventures – this time in the abandoned city of Chernobyl.
Over the years, Nick from Abandoned Isle of Wight has shared videos from his explorations around the Island, inside former nuclear bunkers or abandoned theatres, but this time he went further afield in, potentially, a much more dangerous situation.
Nick explained the premise of the film to News OnTheWight,
“This film chronicles an unauthorised exploration of one of the most fascinating and eerie places on Earth – the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The adventure, captured in 2018 before the escalation of the current conflict in Ukraine, offers a unique glimpse into a world frozen in time, now more inaccessible than ever.
“With a combination of unique on the ground visuals and a deeply personal narrative, the documentary takes viewers on an intimate journey through the abandoned streets of Pripyat, the shadows of vast exclusion zone, and beyond.”
Exploring inside the Exclusion Zone
The 35 minute video gives you a incredible view of the area surrounding the abandoned city, as Nick and his Island friend Ben, with the help of a local guide, work their way through the forests, along disused railway tracks and race across open roads desperate not to be seen.
Their mission is to get as far into the Exclusion Zone as they can without being spotted by guards.
Transcending traditional documentary storytelling
Nick added,
“As a filmmaker, my goal was to transcend traditional documentary storytelling, to not only showcase the physical exploration of Chernobyl but to capture the emotional and historical resonance of the zone
“I hope this documentary is a testament to the spirit of adventure and a profound respect for the area’s history and its tragic past.”
