Councillor Ed Blake on Leeson Road

Ed Blake on how we keep Ventnor connected to the Isle of Wight (podcast)

Earlier in the week, News OnTheWight spoke with Ventnor and St Lawrence councillor, Ed Blake, about the ongoing situation with the closure of Leeson Road following the Bonchurch landslide in December 2023.

The podcast interview, delves into various local issues with Councillor Blake, focusing on infrastructure, community concerns and future planning for the Ventnor area.

Community’s desire for road reopening
Councillor Blake discussed the strong community desire to reopen this road, whilst emphasising the importance of safety.

He highlighted the road’s significance as a major lifeline for Ventnor, noting that its closure has severely affected the area, compounded by other long-term infrastructure works and the impacts of Covid-19 on local businesses.

Traffic challenges and infrastructure concerns
Councillor Blake expressed concern about the cumulative effect of multiple roadworks and the current lack of traffic to Ventnor, stressing that the town is suffering from both a decrease in visitors and an increase in logistical challenges.

He mentioned temporary traffic lights and the need for essential emergency works, reminding us of the fact that utility companies (such as water, electricity and gas) have permission for emergency action, which, although understandable, adds to the disruptions.

Community response and road safety
The councillor also touched on the community’s response to these issues, including a recent public meeting that left many unsatisfied with the lack of clear solutions.

He discussed the challenges of monitoring and the potential for landslips, advocating for a proactive approach to road safety and monitoring to prevent further closures and ensure quick responses to any risks.

Long-term planning and innovative solutions
Looking ahead, Councillor Blake emphasised the need for long-term planning, including considering innovative infrastructure projects like tunnels or utilising old railway tunnels to ensure the area’s future connectivity.

He mentioned forming a group with local engineers to explore such solutions and the importance of securing funding for these significant projects.

Balancing environmental concerns with community needs
The interview ended with a discussion on the balance between protecting the environment and ensuring community safety.

Councillor Blake argued for creative, sometimes “bonkers” ideas to be considered, acknowledging the environmental impacts of potential solutions, but stressing the necessity of prioritising the community’s needs.

He advocated for a comprehensive approach to transport and infrastructure planning that considers the long-term well-being and safety of the Ventnor area and its residents.
