Isle of Wight grapples with Storm Darragh’s wrath and travel disruptions

Storm Darragh has been making its way across the Isle of Wight bringing down trees and causing cross-Solent disruption.

Compared to Wales and other parts of the country, the Island has got off quite lightly, but as expected, the Solent is experiencing strong wind gusts, currently of up to 60mph.

Suspended services
Red Funnel report that the RedJet timetable remains partially suspended and that the vehicle ferry remains suspended between Southampton and East Cowes until further notice.

Not surprisingly, the Hovertravel Services is suspended, but passengers can use their tickets on the Wightlink vehicle ferry.

Wightlink’s FastCat foot passenger service between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head is now suspended.

Wightlink vehicle ferries
Fastcat customers are advised to travel on the Fishbourne-Portsmouth car ferries, a shuttle service is in operation to take passengers between the Island ports using a coach.

Wightlink’s Lymington-Yarmouth ferries are currently on schedule.

Fallen trees
Island Roads and their contractors have been kept busy. They reported via Twitter that Brading Downs Road is currently impassable due to a falling tree. They are on their way to clear it.

Earlier this morning they responded to reports of fallen or dangerous trees at Bonchurch Shute, Hillis Gate Road at Parkhurst and Calbourne Road.

Overnight they responded to reports of fallen or dangerous trees at Bouldnor Road, Yarmouth, Cowlease Hill at Shanklin, New Barn Road at East Cowes and Pixley Hill at Freshwater.

Our thanks to Mighty Acorn Photography for sharing the photo above of the damage a fallen pine tree caused to a car parked in Bouldnor car park – we’re assured no-one was hurt.
